This is a Revised Second Edition of translation from the Chinese by Hisao Inagaki. These three sutras make up the most important scriptures of the Pure Land School of Buddhism, which centers around the Buddha of Infinite Light & Life, known in Japanese as the Amida Buddha. Summary: Excellent work!
Comment: Wow, this thing took three weeks to get to me, but boy, was it worth the wait! Not only are all three of the Pure Land Sutas translated (and not in the silly "English Free" form, a way of paraphrasing instead of translating word-for-word), there is a section on the history and philosophy of Pure Land Buddhism. I suggest you buy "River of Fire, River of Water" to introduce yourself to Pure Land Buddhism before you buy this, and then go for the gusto, man!

Summary: My choice if I were on a desert island.
Comment: This is one of my favorite books. It's the best on Pureland Buddhism. It gives a history of this schools development, a brief description of all the important historical teachers and practitioners, as well as excellent explanations of the three sutras and their doctrines. The copious diagrams clarifying the emphases of the approach of various teachers is the most outstanding characteristic of Hisao Inagaki's work. Also very helpful are the explanations of the more pertinent Vows of Amitabha. After a general familiarization with Pureland Buddhism, this is the book I would recommend most to deepen one's understanding of Shinrans work and that of his predecessors.
In addition there are other excellent books by Inagaki, some of which I own, and all of which I heartily recommend.
