This 1980 recording proved to be one of Milton Nascimento's most durable. Here was his incredible voice, growling one minute, soaring into falsetto the next, laidback yet aggressive. The record opens with an amazing dirge to a dying brother, sung by Nascimento and Nana Caymmi, backed by a group of Christian monks. On other, more uptempo tunes he is also joined by the great Mercedes Sosa (on Cuban poet Silvio Rodriquez' "Dram with Serpents"), the vocal ensemble Boca Livre, and on three tracks by the experimental percussion ensemble Uakti. The songs are imbued with Nascimento's worldly sensibility, mixing the music of Minas Gerais with a broad collection of sounds from Latin America and the jazz world, tinged with classical and medieval themes. Not as wildly experimental as his "Clube da Esquina" recordings of previous years, this is a mature, thoughtful album. --Louis Gibson

Customer Rating: Summary: The magic of Milton at his very best Comment: This is such a memorable record. Milton left us so impressed when this record came out. We were still trying to recover from his earlier masterpieces, like Minas and Geraes. It was a time when Milton had great musicians next to him, such as the dear Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, Novelli, and the rest of the gang from Minas Geraes. In later years, his group members were far less talented (as is the case of Ricardo Silveira, Rick Pantoja, Celso Fonseca, what a shame). After all this years, it seems almost a miracle that from that corner of Brasil, so much great music was made. Milton's lyrics are also very powerful, always talking about friendship, children, the small town we almost always seem to leave behind. Like Neruda, perhaps, he makes the everyday sound unique in the best sense of the word. Highly recommended.
Customer Rating: Summary: Milton's folk music singing. Comment: This is a beautiful album with a combination of Milton Nascimento's own wonderful music, one Argentine folk song (Sueno con serpientes) which he sings with Mercedes Sosa , and two Brazilian folk songs which are very beautiful. Cantiga do Caico is a folk song collected by Villa Lobos and has been sung in many diferent ways . Milton's interpretation of "Caico" with an orchestra - the violins in particular - is simply breath taking.
