Customer Rating: Summary: This is Sutherland at her very best! Comment: I bought this Puritani along with her Sonnambula of the same year with Resigno. What a contrast! I don't mean her technique, which remains in unequaled in both performances. But in this performance under the great Serafin her expression and interpretation reached heights which she would never again achieve with her permanent conductor and husband Richard Bonynge. Here her virtuosity is completely at the service of her art, and indeed I'm sure Bellini would believe that she had achieved his goal of making his audiences weep, and die of weeping. She sounds absolutely hearbreaking in Oh vieni al tempio, and you weep with her in the famous qui la voce. In the cabalettas, she tastefully refrained from over decorating her melodies, witout at all diminishing her stature as the supreme Bel Canto artist of her time. This is a recording I will return to frequently to savour its many beauties, and is is far ahead of her 2 studio recordings. I've always thought that Dame Joan deserved a better conductor than her husband, and here is ample proof! And furthermore, I hear little evidence of her infamous diction in this recording!
Customer Rating: Summary: Just Good Comment: Bellini - I Puritani / Sutherland Good, but can't hold a candle to the Phila performance with Gedda, Diaz etc. simply because EVERY singer that nite was "GLORIOUS" Was released on SRO and hopefully they will do so again. Was there that nite and will NEVER forget it.
Customer Rating: Summary: A great recording, at an even better price! Comment: For those of you who seek out recordings of Joan Sutherland at her best, this is one to add to your collection! While the sound quality is not great, as it is a live recording, the muscianship and performances you will hear are top notch. I highly recommend this recording, and at the listed price, you really can't beat it.
Customer Rating: Summary: some facts, and then some opinions Comment: There seems to be some confusion about just which Puritani this is. It's the Bella Voce 2CD BLV107.227. (Not Decca, not Bonygne). It was recorded live in Palermo ,1961, with Sutherland, Raimondi, Mazzoli, Zanasi c. Serafin. And it's FABULOUS....but, the sound is not so good if you expect studio quality. There's lots of stage noise, prompting, and a very vocal Palermo audience. Sutherland and Raimondi are simply superb. Serafin makes you cry with the beauty of the tempi. However be warned - this is not studio. The men record well and they alone make it a wothwhile buy, however you may think Sutherland sometimes sounds 'thin' especially in the upper register. Apart from the obvious, some highlights are a very moving "Sai com'arde in petto mio" (Sutherland/Mazzoli) and a sensatioanl show-stopping "Vieni fra questa braccia" (Sutherland/Raimondi). For collectors who know her voice, and are able to "hear" her as she sang, this is the one. It's another of her live performances that far eclipse many of her stuffy studio recordings.
Customer Rating: Summary: A steal! Far better than the Sutherland/Pavarotti! Comment: This is a steal of a Puritani. It features a young Sutherland who sings like an angel. The voice is ten times clearer than the more expensive Puritani, and the coloratura and high notes far better. I don't know why everyone isn't grabbing this one fast. It's the best purchase I've made.
