Editorial Reviews:

OscarÂ(r) winner* Robert Duvall writes, directs and stars in this "fascinating" (Roger Ebert) tale of dancing, deception and deadly passion on the sizzling streets of Argentina. Starring Ruben Blades, Kathy Baker and Luciana Pedraza, Assassination Tango is "part gritty crime thriller, part dance-driven romance, part evocative character study" (The Hollywood Reporter). Veteran hit man John J. (Duvall) has just received the toughest assignment of his career: Travel to Buenos Aires, take down a corrupt general and be back in America in less than three days. But when the hit is unexpectedly delayed, John finds himself prowling the city's intoxicating tango clubs only to be seduced by a sultry dancer (Pedraza), tempted by the tango and betrayed by a lethal conspiracy. *1983: Actor, Tender Mercies

Summary: Despite what anyone else says, it's a good story
Comment: The story is fine, maybe not "The Natural" but a good character study nonetheless - and the dancing alone is enough to merit a watch.

Summary: ASSASSINATION TANGO
Comment: The storyline was somewhat different and pure cinema, but the music and dancing was indeed worth the purchase of the video. It was a magnificent tribute to the tango.

Summary: FANTASTIC FILM
Comment: Loved this film, which was done on location in Argentina, and partyly NYC. Fantastic cast, including Ruben Blades playing a small cameo. Duvall was at his best and was interesting to watch interact with the locals. He's a fascinating man and astounding actor who even did a good job of pulling off the tango scenes. The film gave you the impression that a great deal of it was improvised. Watching the tango was totally mesmermizing. What a sensous dance.

Vendor did a great job in getting the product to me on time and in great condition. Would highly recommend both film and vendor.

Summary: Assasinated Tango
Comment: This film illustrates Duvall's passion for and interest in Dancing.
He has (briefly) danced before in film but here Tango is to the fore.
Forget the "hit-man" plot it's not worth the trouble and how he could
walk away from that woman (a great Tango dancer aswellas a looker)
is beyond me. See it ONLY for some tango scenes. N.B. the
young girl showing Duvall how to hook and kick.
Unless you are (very) keen on tango - avoid.

Summary: Self indulgent ego trip
Comment: I purchased this upon the recommendation of a friend who is just learning tango and based upon a general Amazon rating of 3 stars--I wish that I had bothered to look at the detailed breakdown of reviews. This is one of the poorest excuses for a movie that I have ever seen. The acting, including Duvall, is amateurish; the directing is non-existent (the use of the term improvisational is generous); and the dancing is poor. My wife and I stuck with it for about 20 minutes waiting for it to get better, thinking that it could not possibly be that bad--but it was. Duvall's impression of an assassin is ludicrous--he blows hot and cold from an unjustified anger at something in life--having grown old? to a patronizing quasi-stepfather...step grandfather?? I would not even give this to someone that I know--that might mistakenly think that I somehow liked it. I have to stop writing now...
