Customer Rating: Summary: More a documental than a Music video Comment: Good sound and the multilingual subtitles are a plus, but is more a documental about Milton Nascimento than a music video, most of the songs are incomplete...
Customer Rating: Summary: Historia de Nascimento Comment: Back in 1979, in the unlikely location of Tulsa, Oklahoma, my younger sister introduced me to the genius and the voice of Milton Nascimento, and opened the door for me to the music of the world that can be heard if only we would stop listening to the playback of our own culture. The recording she shared with me was "Clube da Esquina", a recording that should be in the library of anyone with a taste for music from somewhere other than the Great American Top 40 Machine. If you know Nascimento's music, you will enjoy this biographical sojourn to the beginnings of his career in Minas Gerais, told through the laughter and reminiscences of his original compatriots like Fernando Brant and Lo Borges, and salted with performances of some of his classic early songs, with guests like Nana Caymmi, Gilberto Gil, Wagner Tiso, and Caetano Veloso. There is even a video clip from ages past of a performance when Nascimento accompanied Elis Regina. Vocally, Milton has his "A" game on for this music DVD -- a delight to those of his fans who have seen or heard him mail it in during some of his more recent recordings. With subtitles, so that the Portuguese-challenged may follow along. If you don't know Milton's music, the money you spend for this DVD could better be spent on "Clube da Esquina" and "Encontros e Despedidas", or "Minas", or his Millennium anthology. But if you love his music, or the richness of the music of Brasil in general, this DVD will delight and inform you.
Customer Rating: Summary: TANGE LOVES MILTON Comment: Milton Nascimento's DVD, "SEDE DO PEIXE," promotes world peace through the natural resource of music. This music helps to extinguish fires from world wars. ...Clube da Esquina ignites smiles and humanity, it's another movement rooted in love. The comments about "SEDE DO PEIXE," here at Amazon.com, reveal that this DVD exudes so much beauty, so just put your arms around the DVD and bring it to your home. Promote peace, and play Milton's music loud! When I turn off Milton's music, before leaving my home, my elder neighbors complain, sigh, and then comment: "Oh,..., you're leaving, and you've turned off the music!" Milton's music synergizes people's minds and hearts.
IT'S ME AGAIN, FROM PHILLY (USA).
TANGE LOVES MILTON
Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic DVD / Fantastic Milton Comment: I am super pleased with the tremendous high quality of this DVD.
The picture is excellent, the audio options are up-to-date, and one of the most helpful features in this DVD is the language options; Portuguese / Spanish / English.
Here Milton shows us some of his personal side along with his friends from Clube da Esquina (except for Toninho Horta).
All of the cuts are incredible, but the highest point of the whole deal is the song "Cais" (or something like "Pier")with Wagner Tiso on piano, and Milton and Nana Caymmi in vocals; is absolutely out of this world.
Anyhow, all his guests: Skank, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Carlinhos Marron, Nana Caymmi, Wagner Tiso, Alcione etc. etc. render a great tribute to Milton and his music.
If you love Milton like many of us do, you owe it to your collection.............
Customer Rating: Summary: ESSENTIAL TOUR DE FORCE!! MILTON & FRIENDS: SUBTITLED IN ENGLISH!! Comment: FIVE STARS!! No, SIX STARS!! This is TOTALLY COMPELLING Milton Nascimento at his best in song, images, and revealing conversations, performing with some great old friends and new ones. And the big news is the full English and Spanish subtitled translation of the ENTIRE DVD: each song and all conversation. And there is The Voice: the mellow tenor and the compelling falsetto, co-existing side by side in one person. This DVD finally cracks the language code on many mysterious verses of well-known Brazilian songs and on the background of Milton, himself. Thank you, Milton, for this translated thoughtfullness, and thank you, Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, for giving us Milton and the numerous members of the Clube de Esquina.
Here you'll find the "Clube de Esquina" (Club on the Corner) song (twice) and some Clube de Esquina group members (Lo Borges, Fernando, Tavinho, Beto, and Wagner Tiso) singing and talking extensively over drinks. Elsewhere the performances take place in a circular stone grotto with great acoustics. There is a short video sliver of a totally spellbound Elis Regina singing "Cancao do Sal" (Salt Song) with Milton: finally we can read the HAUNTING lyrics as it's sung by Brasil's 'Queen Diva', herself. The wonderful Zelia Duncan is SPELLBINDING singing "San Vicente" in duet with an obviously appreciative Milton. The classic song about the place called "Ponta de Areia" (Bridge of Sand) becomes a wordless tone poem for Wagner Tiso's spare piano and Milton's poignant accordion. Add to this, big spare performances by Lo Borges & Co, the fabulous Nana Caymmi (a sizzling "Cais" (The Docks) with some spine-tingling Milton falsetto & great piano from Wagner T. The English lyrics are sensationally poetic.), a very sassy Alcione, classic Caetano Velosa, vibrant Gilberto Gil (Wow, "Raca" is great!!), the fabulous Alaide Costa (who transforms "Me Diexa Em Paz"), and a hard rocking Skank, among many others, and you have a fabulous DVD by a 'Living National Brazilian Treasure' and a virtual constellation of stars performing with him. Even the jam sessions over drinks and conversation are fascinating. And only Milton could make music and rhythm from a sheet of aluminum foil (with Carlinhos Brown, who is also predicting the future).
Six Stars for Milton, the music, cinematography, conversation, sound (Dolby Digital 2.0 or 5.1) and the awesome, almost glee-ful singing guest stars, especially the members of Clube De Esquina. Now you'll know what all the adulation is all about!! Essential Milton Nascimento!!
(Notes:
* It's good to see producers giving us the full English sub-titled translation of each song. I think many Brazilian producers finally realize there's a huge audience for MPB music outside of Brazil. Especially in the USA.
* If you own the "Clube De Esquina" CD, this DVD is the 'Rosetta Stone' to the translation of some of those wonderful songs from Portuguese to English/Spanish.
*By the way, If you want to SEE Elis Regina singing a complete version of "Cancao do Sal" (Salt Song), buy the DVD "Elis Regina - MPB Especial 1973", it's fabulous.)
