Editorial Reviews:

A two CD mix of classical and pop music. (28 tracks in all) In 1929, the ancient map "Piri Reis" was discovered in Constantinople. The map is extraordinary because it depicts bays and islands on the Antarctic coast which have been concealed under ice for at least 6,000 years. What civilization was capable of such exploration that long ago ? On "Cartographer", we imagine that these explorers were from the tiny island of Numa in the Southern Indian Ocean. As advanced seafarers, they navigated every corner of the Earth. We have created a language unique to them and tell stories through song that describe their creation, discoveries and ultimate demise. This is a 2 CD collection with Vocal and Remix versions of every song. The Remix CD also contains 2 bonus tracks.

Summary: If you loved Nara, you will love Cartographer
Comment: ES Posthumus has become quiet well known due to the beautiful ' Nara' track, often used in trailers and TV themes. If you loved this track, than I am sure you will love this album. Most of the tracks are in the style of Nara or Cuzco, and although they do sound alike, the melodies are beautiful and timeless. Almost each track uses choirs, but in a subtle way and not as powerfull as on 'Unearthed' .The album does not use fast tracks with heavy choirs , often used on the first album and heard on action movie trailers.

It would say this album is smoother than the first one. The more you listen, the more you love it so don't judge it too quickly, it will grow on you. What does not make sense to me is that ES Posthumus decided to use the instrumental remixed verions as the second CD. The second CD is what ES Posthumus is all about. The first CD with Luna Sans is nice ,but should have been marketed as the bonus CD - nice to have , nice to listen to, but could have been made by other musicians. I believe the ES Posthumus fans will all mostly listen to the 15 track second CD. If you loved Unearthed, you will need to own this album. Give it a chance.

Summary: Excellent Follow-up to "Unearthed"
Comment: Thanks to the Vonlichtens for not just making "Unearthed 2." They stepped it up by adding vocals to their brew and came up with another winner. Fans of Clannad and Enya will find something new to enjoy with a Spanish feel from the vocals and guitars, as well as African rhythms. The second disc contains remixes of all of the disc one tracks plus two others. Luna's lead vocals are nixed from the remixes in favor of a sound that is closer to that heard on "Unearthed." This is a consistently good CD set that will stand the test of time in your music library. Give it some time. "Cartographer" gets better with each listen!

Summary: What a pity, but - disappointed ...
Comment: I'm a huge fun of E.S. Posthumus' first album. That time I thought "WOW! That's the music I was always looking for!". Few years later I had opportunity to find Globus and their album Epicon. And for a long time these two CDs were one of my favorites.
When I heard about Cartographer I was quite excited - another great CD is coming!... I was wrong.
The worst tracks (in my opinion of course) from the first album, now covers whole 2 CD album in Cartographer. Boring, in one mood, one pitch, almost like everything on the same note...
I could say it's kind of quasi-relaxing music for stretching nothing else, without fire, without expression, without emotions... Just boring flow of one song is some more or less complexed variations.

Maybe my problem is my expectation - I expected too much, or just something different - I hoped ES Poshumus will go after Globus style, but they didn't - music is pretty, nice but nothing special, nothing to be pround of.

By the way - the Voice on 1st CD is really nothing , nothing special - just another silky sound amound silky strings and quasi-ethnic drums.
Instead Cartographer - the name of the album should be 'Sleep Well'.

Corny, naive, nice, soft with some good moments - but far , far , far behind state of art of Unherted or Globus' Epicon

Summary: E.S. Posthumus is always good!
Comment: No,this is not as good as Unearthed. But maybe the bar was set too high with Unearthed. Forget the first CD in Cartographer;toss it!It really isn't worthy. The second CD "Cartographer remix" is the classic E.S.Posthumus we know and love. Maybe it is not Unearthed but it is still E.S. Posthumus; and there is no bad E.S. Posthumus!!!!!

Summary: You have to own this!
Comment: Name your mood! Name your style! This is solid, quality music with melodies that will stick with you and perfection of arrangements and production that I haven't heard anywhere else. These guys get it right and you'll be glad you got BOTH CD's. You won't get tired of them for years to come. Enjoy!
